At the start of each year, our Headteacher Mrs. Lennon gives a speech to all staff in which she explains our school’s mission, vision and values. We are reprinting the September 2026 below in order to share this understanding with our whole community.
Colleagues,
As we gather at the start of a new academic year, I want to begin by expressing my gratitude for your continued commitment to St John Fisher Catholic Comprehensive School. We are a large, diverse, inclusive Catholic community, and our work is rooted in a mission that is both profound and demanding.
Our Mission is clear: St John Fisher inspires students spiritually and educationally, forming them through Faith, so that they achieve their aspirations and contribute to their community. This mission is not simply a statement; it is the foundation of our daily practice, our professional expectations, and our shared purpose.
Nothing in the universe moves faster than light. It travels forward with purpose, brilliance, and unstoppable momentum. Our students are rays of light – each one carrying limitless possibilities, unique origins, and untapped intensities of potential. Some arrive already shining brightly; others have travelled through darkness to reach us. All deserve the chance to flourish.
As a school, we are the prism that refracts their light. Through teaching, pastoral care, high expectations, and Catholic formation, we help each student discover the full spectrum of their talents, character, and future pathways.
Our staff are the lenses that focus this light – guiding, shaping, and amplifying the potential of every child. You do this through your expertise, your compassion, your consistency, and your belief that every student can shine.
Collectively, we are a galaxy of stars, each one’s light amplifying the others. The illumination our students create will not only brighten their own futures; it will strengthen and enrich our wider community.
This is our vision. This is our calling. And this is why the work we do matters.
Our values are not abstract concepts; they are the behaviours, decisions, and standards we expect from every member of staff.
- Community – We are the golden thread woven through the tapestry of Rochester. Proudly Catholic and proudly inclusive, we hold our community together and allow it to hold us when needed.
- Excellence – Built on effort and expertise. We expect every staff member to do their absolute best and to expect the best of others.
- Learning – We nurture deep roots of knowledge and curiosity. Our curriculum is carefully planned, purposeful, and ambitious.
- Service – Every member of our community is called to serve, from the newest Year 7 to the Headteacher. Service is how we live our faith.
- Integrity – Guided by a moral compass, we challenge injustice, act with courage, and navigate difficult decisions with honesty and unity.
These values must be visible in every classroom, every corridor, every interaction, and every decision we make.
Our Catholic identity is not confined to assemblies or RE lessons. It is witnessed in all facets of school life. We stand on holy ground: every child, every young person, every adult is a unique image of God.
We are invited to nurture the life of the spirit in one another so that we become more like Christ – fully human and fully alive. This ethos must be shared by all who work here. It shapes how we teach, how we lead, how we support, and how we challenge.
The strength of St John Fisher lies in its staff. When we work together – with clarity, consistency, and shared ambition – we create an environment where pupils flourish and colleagues feel supported.
This year will bring challenges. It always does. But it will also bring moments of joy, pride, and transformation. Moments where a student discovers a talent, overcomes a barrier, or finds confidence they didn’t know they had. Moments where your expertise and care change the trajectory of a young person’s life.
Those moments are why we are here.
As we begin this new academic year, I ask each of you to recommit to our mission, our vision, our values, and our pupils. Bring your best self. Bring your expertise. Bring your faith. Bring your belief in the light within every child.
Together, we will continue to be the prism that refracts their potential into a million possibilities.
