The Cycle of the Catholic Liturgical Year
The Catholic Liturgical Year is the Church’s annual cycle of worship, guiding Christians through the key events of Jesus Christ’s life, death, and resurrection.
- Advent (4 weeks)
- The beginning of the Church year.
- A season of preparation for the coming of Jesus at Christmas and His return at the end of time.
- Liturgical colour: Purple.
- Christmas Time
- Celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ and His manifestation to the world.
- Continues until the Baptism of the Lord.
- Liturgical colour: White/Gold.
- Ordinary Time (Part 1)
- Focuses on Jesus’ teaching, ministry, and miracles.
- Encourages growth in faith and discipleship.
- Liturgical colour: Green.
- Lent (40 days)
- A season of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving.
- Prepares Catholics to celebrate Easter.
- Liturgical colour: Purple.
- The Paschal Triduum
- The most important days of the Church year:
- Holy Thursday
- Good Friday
- Holy Saturday
- Commemorates Christ’s Passion, Death, and Resurrection.
- Easter Time (50 days)
- Celebrates Jesus’ Resurrection and victory over sin and death.
- Ends with the feast of Pentecost.
- Liturgical colour: White/Gold.
- Ordinary Time (Part 2)
- Continues from Pentecost until Christ the King.
- Focuses on living as followers of Christ in everyday life.
- Liturgical colour: Green.
Christ the King
- Marks the end of the Liturgical Year.
- Celebrates Jesus as Lord and King of all creation.
- Leads into a new season of Advent and the cycle begins again.

The Liturgical Year helps Catholics journey with Christ through all the mysteries of salvation, growing in faith, hope, and love throughout the year.
