Key Stage 3:
Our work at Key Stage 3 focuses on building core skills; from drawing and painting through to colour theory and artist analysis. Students undertake a series of short excitingly themed projects that help to support their development and ability to communicate visually. They will experience projects which deal with fine art, painting, illustration as well as design for performance. The curriculum delivery is modelled closely on the recommendations from the National Society for Education in Art & Design and seeks to prepare our students for progression on to one of the Creative and Performing Arts Faculty subjects at Key Stage 4
Key Stage 4:
At Key Stage 4 we deliver the Level 2 BTEC First Award in Art & Design, this course is the equivalent of a GCSE in Art & Design but offers our students a much broader range of study. In Year 9 and the first half of Year 10 the course is dedicated to building more core skills, recording in a variety of media and materials as well as looking at a broad selection of artists and designers for inspiration. This is delivered as a series of short 6- 8 week projects which are modelled on real world vocational scenarios and deals with specialisms such as fine art painting, sculpture, illustration, graphic design, printmaking, 2D and 3D communication. As students move in to the later stages of Year 10 and in to Year 11 they have the opportunity to specialise further in a chosen area of the art & design subject and to develop a professional and vocationally appropriate Art & Design portfolio.
Over the duration of the course we plan to take students on a number of trips to galleries and locations for projects as well as holding regular exhibitions alongside the other Creative and Performing Arts subjects to celebrate the success of our students.
The beauty of the BTEC system is that not only does it prepare the students for post 16 education and beyond but it also gets them used to understanding how Art & Design works in a vocational sense.
