The travel and tourism industry is one of the biggest and fastest growing industries in the UK. The total contribution of travel and tourism to global economy is estimated to be $7.17 trillion and the number of international tourist arrivals worldwide are 1,186 million. Travel and tourism is a rapidly changing industry that requires employees with an enthusiastic approach to people. The industry is about working hard and playing hard, with good incentives.

Curriculum Outline

You will be expected to complete coursework in order to gain the qualification. You will be finding out about how the Travel and Tourism industry is made up and how it functions. Most of the units are assessed internally by means of assignments, which are based on practical “hands on” tasks taught in the context of real jobs and careers in the Travel sector. This gives you the chance to explore the opportunities offered in that sector, and to acquire appropriate vocational skills. All of the assignments are externally moderated by Edexcel and an overall grade of a Pass, Merit, Distinction or Distinction will be awarded upon completion of the course.

Year 9, 10, 11 NQF BTEC level 2 in Travel and Tourism

Students have the opportunity to complete the BTEC level 1/2 BTEC First Award NQF which involves learning about UK, European and World Destinations, Customer Service and the Development of the Travel and Tourism Industry. Assessment is 75% coursework and 25% written exam. ICT functional skills are developed by using ICT systems to research and produce evidence for assessment activities. Students become independent enquirers and creative thinkers. Students will be given the opportunity to visit Chessington World of Adventures, Thorpe Park, Paris and Disney Paris as part of their studies.

Year 12 and 13 NQF BTEC level 3 in Travel and Tourism

The level 3 BTEC Diploma continues along the same themes with more in depth study of each topic which is backed up by visits, visiting speakers, video evidence and class discussion.
Assessment is 100% coursework and can take written or more practical forms. This course has links to most subjects especially Business Studies, Physical Education, PSHE, ICT and Media Studies. Students will be given the opportunity to visit Colchester Zoo as part of their studies as well as completing two units of coursework while on an eight day trip to Malta.

Year 12 level 2 NQF BTEC level 2 in Travel and Tourism
